Leadership Interview Answers


Stepping up to be a leader is a great task to undertake. While you want to assert your authority, you also want to be able to hear out your fellow team members and learn from them as well. Because of the numerous responsibilities that leaders have to take on, interviewers want to know if you are able to handle them. Listed below are five questions typically asked during interviews regarding leadership qualities. Each question is followed by guidelines you must adhere to in order to respond to the question successfully.

1) Have you ever been a leader in a team? What did you do to perform your role?

While it is important to know how to be a team member, it is equally important to know how to lead the team if appointed to. This does not necessarily mean that you can make all those subordinate to you work harder. You must have the:

-Desire to serve
-Enthusiasm and expertise that any authority should have
-Will to take responsibility for any mishap that might occur
-Strength to overcome obstacles and support the team -Respect for the team members’ opinions even if they are below you in rank

2) What would you say are the three most important qualities of a leader?

The interviewer wants to know which qualities you value most. While this question is based on your opinion, some suggestions are:

-Integrity - Respectable leaders must be truthful to themselves, their teams, clients, and in their authority. 


-Ability to Listen – Without being able to listen, they will not learn from their team or the experiences that come from conflicts. Communication will not be existent and relationship may break down.
-Have Vision – By having goals and being creative with the path to achieve them, the team will have clear knowledge of the purpose and actively cooperate with each other.

3) How do you convince people to agree with your idea or goals?

This question tests your ability to sell your idea to your team without being pushy about it. Respond with important tactics such as:

-Having belief in your idea: If you have confidence in your purpose, do not hesitate in mentioning why you believe in your idea; This also includes having charisma when you speak, including word choice and body language
-Showcasing your knowledge: Knowing facts about the subject may help supplement the idea and introduce facts that the other people might not know

4) How do you handle situations of conflict?

You can effectively answer this question by leading them through a process, which includes:

-Assessing the situation: Analyze the conflict
-Gathering information: Ask each person about their thoughts and opinions
-Target the problem: Track the root of the issue
-Brainstorm possible solutions: Think about what actions can be taken to solve the problem
-Negotiate a solution: With all the parties involved, help them to figure out middle ground, make them compromise

5) How do you maintain a positive discussion?

This question is related to the question listed prior to this. The interviewer is testing how you handle situations of conflict. You must mention rules you will enforce for them and for yourself such as:

-Not allowing team members to criticize unconstructively
-Let them know that name-calling or any racist or sexist remarks are inappropriate
-Though they may disagree on a certain idea, they must be able to accept that the opposing idea may be the one that is used and not be bitter about it
-Emphasizing the positive aspects in both ideas will help them to see what they might have been blinded by because of their strong beliefs in their own idea
