Finance Job Interview Questions And Answers

Q: Tell me how you work in a team.

A: Teamwork is essential in business and finance. When a team gets along, they produce the best work. Each team member responds to group work differently though. I’ve found that the best way to succeed is through adaptability. I have learned to work with a variety of individuals by adapting for the greater benefit of the team. For example, one time I had to adjust my schedule in order to work nights because that was the only time our group could get together.

Q: Are you comfortable with working overtime?

A: I’m a dedicated worker, and I am willing to work extra hours in order to complete a project on time. I understand that in this line of work schedules need to be flexible, so I would work overtime in order to finish a time sensitive project.

Q: Why are you pursuing a career in finance?

A: I’ve always been very organized and interested in math. Pursuit of those qualities led me into investment banking, which has been my dream ever since. (Note: Avoid a personal anecdote here. It is not a successful tactic when interviewing for a job in banking and finance. Show your passion and dedication to the career through what you’ve accomplished already.)

Q: What’s your greatest weakness?

A: Sometimes I find it difficult to focus on numbers by the end of the day. I have realized that it often helps if I get some fresh air and take a five-minute walk during my lunch break to refocus.

Q: How do you keep up to date with finance?

A: I’ve been reading economist journals and magazines ever since I was a little kid. Now I’m always on the Internet on my time off because I love finding out what’s new.

Q: What do you think about the Japanese economy?

Note: This or something similar is a commonly asked question. Interviewers want to make sure that you keep up with the news, form opinions, and express them clearly. These opinion questions may be tough to answer at first. You can improve on your answers with every interview that you do though. Ask your interviewer these questions before you leave so you can perfect these answers in future interviews.

Expect your interviewer to ask technical questions. You need to be prepared because you cannot miss these. You will be up against a number of very qualified competition, so these types of questions are easy ways for interviewers to weed out candidates. Know a few cases very well so that you can discuss them if you are asked about your favorite case. Most people applying for this job have MBAs, so if you do not, then you need to prove that you are just as qualified.
